I really liked the idea that you took the ritual aspect and actually made a ritual. Very creative! Although the video could be seen as different stories with different meanings I dont think it hurt your video at all. Loved the fire effects!

Nicole

Soo cute but joel is right very sad.. I loved that you were a part of the project tied up in all the wire. Very good correlation between the loved pet and loved technology!

Joel!

Happy POP! lovee it.. and hate it.. the entire time I just wanted to say the next line but then another obnoxious song came on. The lyrics I wanted to write down to see the message that you are sending but it was a bit difficult to keep up since I would get so excited and like Gaby said all the memories from the past just kept popping up.

Will

I Wish I Wish

This video is about this idea thats been on my mind for a while, more like a theory really, of how it is better to want to want then to actually have. How if we only accepted the fact that we will always just want more and never be satisfied then everyone would feel better as accomplishments will be fulfilled. The little girl in the video is wishing and wanting and waiting. Feeling uneasy her wishes and desires are inside her..(the flower in her mouth) She ends up in a pleasant forest with flowers where there is no worry or stress just peace and ease but instead of being out and enjoying all the wonder shes in a flower cocoon just waiting again.. Waiting to be free maybe but this waiting is peaceful. This is how we should be.. accept the wait instead of dreading... It is more beautiful to live with desire and drive then no desire or drive. The music at the end was a part of my last music piece that I just thought went well with the imagery. as a growing intensity of what could be but isn't... which leads to her sleeping.

DAN GRAHAM

By: Joel... The artist works with installations, video, sculpture...
Performance audience mirror: video.... low performance of middle aged guy walking around and des ribing every move he makes and what is happening to his body as he takes each step.. describes his thoughts and what he thinks of the audience and what gestures they make. A performance about performance. Talking about what is honestly going on through the back of the mind during any other performance. taking what is thought and turning it into what is said. Actions we take with our unconscious mind.

Constructed sound Space

For this project I wanted to create more of a narrative. To see if music can make a story happen and to see what feelings I can arise from the audience. Because our spot is a stair case that wraps around Im hopping there to be some echoing. With this piece I;d like there to be a beginning a birth that leads to a violent destructive middle or war which eventually leads to the aftermath and quiet nature/ respect giving silence with a bit of hope that helps it move on to the next day. My main idea came from struggle. Struggling to make it through just about anything. Problems that life brings us and where they lead us. Hopefully I can pull this off.

Artist Presentations

william Wegman

suspenseful narrative created for audiences reactions. Very simple video to focus on what was going on which was the dog and the biscuit in a jar. Random objects appear in the frame throughout the piece (teddy bear, wooden block, microphone..) Childlike feel to the dog. No passage of time through light shadows shown. It is an ongoing uncut film. More like a recording of an experiment. What will the dog go through to open a glass jar to get into the treat.

Joe Wright

Director of Pride and Prejudice, Atonement, the soloist, Indian Summer. He uses natural lighting for all of his scenes. Tries to stick to most natural surroundings.. love! Although Some of the scenes seemed to have been shot with a green screen.

sound crit

Broke knee before this..

leslie... THe windshield wipers one was very smart I really enjoyed it. I like the idea that there is chaos and order when it rain outside. Loved the big splashes that started to come during the middle of the piece they kind of woke me up. ~the Sun is going to blow up.. funny and dark I like.

nicole: twitter- spelling over and over haha longish I wish there was a little something else to it maybe some music?. cute ending.

Jimmeeeyy: All the different prayers flow lovely together. I especially like the other languages that I cannot understand. Its beautiful. The english preacher is a bit annoying but I like the overall theme you did a good shocking job. GOD ending ;) 2nd one wow can you say creepy?! i might have nightmares. HAHA Im glad you left the its in the public domain. I find that so annoying whenever I hear audiobooks.

kirsten: When I met you at the disco-tech! I feel like getting up and dancing. It sounds more like djing. I'm not sure how much you messed with the found data but it sounds pretty good. I don't know if you found it all from one song already made and broke it up or if you put it together piece by piece. 2nd one.. very peaceful and hawiish like. Im not sure it was as much of an attention grabber as the first one. Although they both had the same feel I thought as far as a style.

KAtie: opera ? sounds beautiful but the abrupt ending is a bit confusing. Looping it however worked fine. 2nd one I like a lot. All the strange sounds coming together to make one musical piece is static.

Gaby: how cute! in a vary annoying strange way lol. I can't help but to think she's hiccuping the entire time . 2 nd loop... This piece would definitely be better for a surround sound sound system. I get the feeling of space being projected.

SAra: Repetition is obvious and the end was a bit draggy but I really liked the switch from the first part to the middle. Great beginning though! I really got excited. 2nd loop.. nice acoustic touch I wish there was more of that.

sounds

For the first loop I chose a sad song about a bird in a cage that was looking for a way out and I incorporated dramatic sounds of a man talking about life and constitution and other tracks to introduce it and also to add more dramatic sadness. To me this is loneliness and finding a way to get out by yourself. Also It is about being heard and having a voice.

My second: loop 2A is about order transforming into chaos. I wanted to go with this idea that even peaceful sounds can get a bit chaotic. So I mixed different bird singing and bird chirps with ocean waves and winds to slowly increase the intensity to the point where it all blends in and creates loud chaos.

Errol Morris: first person - The little gray man

Master of disguise... can you be a spy? (documentary)
How to avoid getting lost in the spy life. Video is simple and toned down. a variety of shots in first person but the video cuts off to specific instances where the shot is not in first person at all. The artist is a contradictor...? hmm -music is spy movie like. Spy theme with wardrobe.

FLUXUS!! - kelsey Ooooo
No Moment-Pier Huyghe (french)
video of a living room with little change happening other than the music. The rule of thirds is used for the shot. The camera stays still the entire time. The tv is on and it is brightly lighting the floor where all these odd shadows take place. The lighting also changes as time passes. Where is the moment? The viewer has control of when the moment happens. music is exciting and nerve wrecking while the video is simple a dull.

CRIT DAY!!!

1st group: mouth

Different styles but fit in well. Lovely title sequence! Each had their own sound which wasn't bad. I loved how different each one of them depicted the subject mouth. Gross make out scene lol Could not really tell that the third vid was all girls mouths but good point! The second vid was a bit confusing but visually interesting.

2nd. group: Sleep

RIP Guinney pig!! Im confused with the sound and bury hallucinating images.Second vid I wish there was more of the drawing on the face then the drinking. 3d video... why the music change if the same action is being done?

3d Group: Rock Paper Scissor

Rock.. its such a beautiful peace but I wish there was more contrast or a sunny day. Maybe a tripod. Loved the feathers! Paper: FUNNY... my favorite part was recycled and least was fire. Scissor: simple but i like it. you did what u said u would.. cut and i love it. i like the image that is forming slowly with all the cut up parts. Good job guys! I enjoyed the menu too.

4th: Sisyphus

5th: nothing

loved the end scene when it zoomed in to the colors! that was my favorite part. Very much about nothing although I was a little confused with the sleeping vid.. is sleeping nothing? or is watching a person sleep nothing? Was the video about doing nothing or the vid itself was nothing?...

Iceland - Thirteen Christmas Lads

Iceland’s 13 Santas or Christmas Kids “Jolasveinar” are the sons of two trolls, Gryla and Leppaludi, and take characters with names like Curd Glutton, Sausage Swiper and Meat Hook, for their mischievous pranks. They started out in olden days to be rather scary boys, but over time have grown into more familiar jolly elfs who arrive one at a time over the twelve days of Christmas and leave little presents for the children who have behaved all year. The kids leave their shoes on their window sills into which the Jolasveinar place gifts to be found by the family. Any children who have been naughty get a potato or some other reminder that good behavior is essential around Christmas. For year round Christmas spirit the House of Christmas in the center of Reykjavik offers quality Icelandic Christmas handicrafts including unique figures of Iceland’s special santas. Just follow Skólavörðustígur street to the big church and look to the left. For a cheap European Christmas experience, Iceland is especially budget friendly now since Santa left a lump of coal in their investment portfolio - and they're the closest.

Fluxua

Today in class we performed a fluxus movement piece where all of my classmates and I went in a room at a certain time and all performed different actions based on our scores that we had previously made. The experience was different then I expected. My movement was to write for the 90 minute period with two five minute breaks under a pink blanket in the middle of the room. Overal I achieved what I said I was going to do but there were a few shocking surprises. For one I got toothpicks thrown on me as I was laying down out of no where.haha it was funny though. And then since I was covered under the blancket I wasn't sure what was going on, but I heard a scream and yelling so I had to look and of course there was a girl getting kidnapped by these two guys in camo.

Overal I really enjoyed it!

Moot

FLUXUS

It is interesting to find out about something that you have never heard of before and then to see how widely spread it is. It makes you feel out of the look in a sense but happy to have joined. Before this article I had never heard of Fluxus. While reading I was looking up some of the names from the article especially george Maciunas and saw how important these people are. It is also very interesting to know that there is a group that was so determined and dedicated that they created themselves without someone coming in and calling them a name. It makes me want to go out there and create my own art group of people that have the same ideas but also ways of thinking. Support groups can go a long way when one is trying to work with a big idea and I've learned that through experience. I really like the part where it says an artist can be an artist and industrialist at the same time. Often we think of these two separate but to achieve the best outcome one must combine the two. An artist is an inventor, collaborator, thinker, maker, producer, and so much more but if it is not for a cause then it is nothing.

While going through the list of the 12 criteria of Fluxus I tried to highlight the ones that apply to me and works I have done so far. Interestingly enough more than half were highlighted. The others are also ways I have already thought about. Globalism to me is the most important because I agree with the fact that although there are boundaries between nations and politics there shouldn't be boundaries between nature and culture. We do all share the same world and I don't think a lot of people think about that. "Fluxus encourages dialogue among like minds, regardless of nation." this is my favorite quote. NO matter where you come from you are entitled to find your people. People you can relate to as far as Ideas and ways to change the world. Collaborators are a must with such big problems surrounding us today.

Project #1 phtotos

Aspects and Elements of Time

This chapter had a lot of information that most people know yet not a lot of people stop to think about. It is all information that is useful to those that want to make a video or consider it as an art form. It is all about the time that it takes to make a video the time it takes to watch the movie and what to do during the time you are recording. Also what sorts of things are important to add in a film. For example transitions. Most movies use the cut, fade and dissolve. However there are a lot more that can be used. Comic books are a bit different from movies but not varied. Then there is Duration, Tempo, Intensity, scope, Setting, Chronology, and composition. A lot to think about when making a movie. That is why one must have an open mind a lot of time and of course money to make a perfect picture take place.

The most important aspect that I found in this reading was tempo. If the movie is not at the right beat in relation to everything else going on, it ruins the entire thing. Tempo is important while filming but also while editing. Enough of the story must be told to make the viewer understand what is taking place. However the time you have to show the film also must be kept in mind. In this case cuts and time passing techniques are used. It is also important to consider what the viewer will pay attention to during that time. If there is something in the background for example how long it takes the audience to notice makes a big deal.

Cultivating Creativity

It's funny how this chapter is called cultivating creativity yet I don't see how a list of behaviors can actually cultivate a creative thinker. Yes all the things listed in this chapter are good organizational skills and staying on time with everything but I doubt reading how to open your mind will actually give you ideas on new projects and such. For me at least the opposite is true. My creativity comes to me when I am most free. When I am not trying to be organized or on top of everything but instead I relax and let go. That is when my mind works best. Also being in a comfortable state. Classroom environments have never ever "cultivated creativity" for me unless I am in my own world and drifting off to imaginative places. This is the Intuition part of me the part that wants to conquer the world. The more Realistic me however does need to follow these steps to turn in assignments on time. I do agree with one thing in this book and that is that creative people have to struggle between this free world we must be in for our minds to run wild and this organized world we must achieve in order to fit in with the rest of the world (grades, meetings, project deadlines.. etc) As an artist this can be very difficult.

For me the most difficult characteristic of :creative thinking is TIME MANAGEMENT. I don't know what kind of pace I will be working on a day to day bases and therefore I cannot possibly know how long it will take me to get something done. But the book says to set the stage so at home I have a very well working environment but sometimes, most times I like to work outside or while i drive... that is when I get most of my thinking done. Something has to inspire me and for something to inspire me I have to go out do things live life and learn everyday. For the mind to have new ideas new ways of thinking the stage must always change. Prioritize, Do what is important first. In art school everything is important first. Most class projects are all due at the same time therefore they all must be done simultaneously. It's a struggle but with time and practice you learn to survive. See The Big Picture, I actually do this. I have to see the end product in my head first to start working. Unless I'm making photograms in the dark room. Then I just experiment and go with it. Happy accidents are always welcome. Work Sequently, not my favorite thing in the world to do as my patience is limited, but i am working on it. I try to plan as best I can but none of my projects ever turn out the way I initially plan them as I tend to make changes along the way and therefore in my brain it is listed that it is pointless to plan. Yet I still need to do it because process is important. I understand the part of feedback during process being important as it can change your original plans for the better so there's a positive. Use parts to create the whole, this is just obvious.
Make the Most of class time, like I said before in class work is hard to do. Perhaps it's the pressure. I cant think creatively under pressure. Having someone watch me do my work is not what I call creative work. Most of the time I find myself doing work in class just to pass time or to practice so that I can do it for real when I get home. Maybe I shouldn't think of classrooms as this pressure box. I suppose I can work on this. Start Early, By the second semester at an art school everyone has learned this with experience. We all know that the best product is made with time. ANd you do not have time unless you start early. When is Doubt Crank is Out, Stepping outside of your safe ground is necessary to produce the best art piece and this is done with research, thinking, and planing. Reasonable enough. Work Together, I like the idea of having help but when someone is working with me I tend to back off a lot as I feel it is not nice to always just have my say in everything. This is always a fail as I do not put my 100% effort in it. This is also a problem I may need to work on if I plan on succeeding with my dreams.

Nam June Paik

Can you say trippy? A video created before photoshop full of color and effects. The firs of the first. Watching these flashbacks of the past helps us remember how good we have it and how easy it is for our creativity to run wild. With just a click away we can make the world tumble over the sun and die or grow from nothing but dirt. Nam June Paik had to have been one hell of a multi-tasker!

Melies

Just learned Embedding.. oops. can you say computer illiterate?

Melies One of the first film makers

Watching this film, one obvious thought comes to mind and that is "wow" how couldthey do all they did back in the day?!!? The film was made in 1902 and film had only justbegan to spread its wings in the late 1800s. This short film is definitely interesting and quiet funny the way the men are all lined up at first with their silly hats and then the women coming in the picture with their long legs and cute outfits. The trip to the moonis not at all what we expect, but Melies Imagination is endless as he figures everything out with cheap equipment. Although the picture is not HD it still can capture the audiences attention with its many characters and silly movements of the stop motion feel.
